Artelia have been appointed by The Chapter of Canterbury in the roles of Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor for The Canterbury Journey project. The project was earmarked a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £11.9m. The total project cost is £19.4m and is contingent on the essential raising of £7.5m in match funding by the Canterbury Cathedral Trust.
This prestigious scheme comprises a wide number of initiatives, from capital works on the Cathedral itself, the historic Precinct entrance of Christ Church Gate and Precincts’ landscaping to a new Welcome Centre with café and community space. A schools’ outreach and community engagement programme will be developed along with integrated visitor interpretation and the opening up of the historic collections held by the Archives and Library. Recruitment and training programmes for apprentices, volunteers and staff will also take place.
The Canterbury Journey project will therefore ensure that both urgent capital works and improved access to visitor and learning facilities can be achieved.
