Artelia UK has been appointed as the Cost Consultants for the prestigious project Goldsmiths College to design a new £1.8 million Art Gallery project.
Assemble is a young and dynamic practice and was awarded the project against an impressive shortlist comprising, 6a Architects, Dow Jones Architects, Harry Gugger Studio, HAT Projects and Jamie Fobert Architects.
The project which should open in 2016, will serve as a ‘symbol of creativity and excellence’ for the University of London College, which includes artists Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley and Sarah Lucas among its alumni.
The former swimming baths will create a new 400m2 gallery inside the building’s water tanks and adjacent spaces, and also create a new entrance hall in front of the tanks. Assemble’s design reuses the Victorian baths’ original black steel water tanks and features two additional steel-framed ‘lanterns’ structures which will also host exhibition space.
The competition judges included former Goldsmiths student Antony Gormley, RIBA Gold Medallist David Chipperfield and philanthropist Candida Gertler.
Simon Cash, Director of Cost Management for Artelia UK said:
“We have worked with this exciting practice (Assemble) on a number of smaller projects and are delighted to be part of the team that has been appointed for this prestigious appointment against some well established and respected names in architecture.”
