A huge scaffolding construction built inside Canterbury Cathedral has opened up even more stunning views of the beautiful building. The giant platform together with the scaffolding on the outside of the building mark the beginning of the physical works of The Canterbury Journey – a £24.7 million development funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (£13.8 million) and donations, which Artelia is project and cost manager for.
The 53 metre long safety deck high above the Cathedral Nave forms a platform both for the Cathedral’s conservation team to work from and to catch any dislodged stone and plaster. The 33 tonne platform is the size of three tennis courts and sits 16 metres above the Nave floor, supported by aluminium beams and 1.9 km of scaffold tubes.
The YouTube video below shows, in time-lapse, how it was constructed without disrupting the operations of the Cathedral.
