Command of the Oceans is a major new attraction that tells the story of Chatham Dockyard during the Age of Sail – a time between the 16th to the mid-19th century when the Navy was at the heart of the British State.
Artelia was appointed as Project Manager to help deliver a number of objectives. These range from a brand new visitor entrance and public with an improved sense of arrival to the Dockyard, a free to enter Discovery Centre to develop learning, understanding and participation and the preservation and interpretation of the timbers of HMS NAMUR – described by archaeologists as “the single most important warship discovery in Northern Europe since that of the Mary Rose”.
The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Homes & Communities Agency. The new galleries and facilities opened in May 2016.
