On behalf of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery, Artelia’s Heritage, Arts and Culture team has run a very successful international architectural and landscape competition for the restoration and upgrade of this iconic London cemetery. The project aims to create a landscape vision and blueprint for managing the 15ha cemetery over the next 25 years. Facilities for staff and visitors will be improved and historic structures across the Grade I-listed site, which is the resting place of Karl Marx, Lucian Freud and George Eliot, will be preserved.

The competition attracted a strong field with the shortlist comprising former Stirling Prize winner Caruso St John, Hopkins, MICA Architects, Dow Jones Manalo & White and Purcell.
A separate competition to create a landscape masterplan shortlisted Colvin and Moggridge, Gustafson Porter and Bowman, J&L Gibbons and Periscope.

Artelia is continuing to work with the client on the second stage of the competition, as the shortlisted teams are invited to submit initial concepts and fee proposals. The winners of both competitions will be announced in May.
