As a key member of the professional team, you will be providing valuable construction cost management services to our clients, responsible for cost planning and management throughout the life cycle of a project:

  • Cost planning and management
  • Carbon budgeting
  • Risk management
  • Lifecycle costing and carbon analysis
  • Budget monitoring
  • Dispute advice
  • Procurement advice
  • Profitability and efficiency planning
  • Cost and carbon value engineering
  • Communication between Project Management and Construction

As a key member of the construction team, you will work closely with Client, Project Manager, the Design Team and other stakeholders to ensure the project achieves best value for money. It is an exciting time to become a cost consultant as AI and machine learning are big disruptors in the industry, and you will have the opportunity to use and help develop these tools as the technology improves.

The scheme itself is flexible and fully adaptable to your development and the opportunities available. There are no restrictions and the pace at which you progress through the graduate programme and in your career, it is completely up to your own self-motivation.

Throughout, we provide you with the training, mentoring and support you need to thrive on your journey to Chartered Status with The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

As a Graduate, you will also join Artelia’s Young Professional Forum where you will network with other graduate professionals (in the UK and abroad) and get to know the consultancy business. The YPF is a supportive environment, with a focus on learning from each other and most importantly, ensuring you have fun whilst at work!!

Graduate Scheme Structure

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

During your first year of the graduate programme you will gain all the core skills to build your career as a Cost Consultant. You will have the opportunity to get fully involved in projects right from the start – working closely with experienced Cost Consultants. The role is incredibly varied, no two projects are the same and all have different demands at each stage. You will be managing relationships with colleagues, clients and a variety of stakeholders – based not just in the office, but out on client sites too. By the end of the year, there is an expectation that you will be given full responsibility for the cost management of one of your own projects.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in basic cost estimation and time/budget tracking for projects. Follow basic contract administration procedures and maintain contract documentation. Comply with basic safety guidelines and participate in safety training. Achieve required safety certification such as CSCS, SMSTS. Assist in basic proposal preparation. Join and contribute to company groups including the Young Professionals Forum.

DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in accurately measuring and quantifying construction works. Provide support in preparing tender documentation. Assist in tracking project costs, maintaining cost records, and monitoring expenditures against the approved budget. Support in the preparation and maintenance of contract documents. Assist in generating cost reports, financial forecasts, and cost-to-complete assessments, helping senior surveyors analyse project financial data. Participate in identifying potential cost-related risks and contribute to developing strategies to mitigate them. Develop proficiency in take-off and cost estimating software (e.g., CostX, Kreo) and assist in utilising them for measurement and cost calculation processes. Learn and apply knowledge of various construction contract types, such as JCT, NEC, and FIDIC, to assist in contract management. Actively seek opportunities for professional growth, attend training, and stay updated with industry best practices and standards.

DIVERSE POSSIBILITIES

After completing your first year at Artelia, you will begin to take on greater responsibility for cost managing projects. You will rotate between different units within the UK office to stretch your Cost Consulting skills and practical knowledge. There are a wide range of opportunities available. Together with your mentor, you could decide to:

  • Develop expertise in the use of BIM for cost estimating and cost management
  • Diversify into specialist areas of knowledge, such as contract, procurement, sustainability or zero carbon etc
  • Build experience in a particular sector such as education, commercial property and historic buildings
  • Broaden your skills to encompass Employers Agent and Contract Administrator roles to your portfolio

CHARTERSHIP

The third year of the programme has been created to expand your horizons, develop your skill set and finalise your path to Chartership. You will be given increasing responsibility, opening up an ever-increasing range of challenging and interesting leadership opportunities.

You will be taught to simultaneously manage multiple cost management projects and take responsibility for managing your own portfolio of projects. You will have the opportunity of working as part of a team delivering high profile major projects not only in the UK, but also internationally.

This programme is flexible and can be adapted to meet your needs and the needs of our clients. There are no restrictions for graduates however Chartership with the RICS through the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) does require 2 years relevant work experience with an RICS accredited degree (or 5 years experience without) before the assessment can be taken.
