The Canterbury Journey is a five-year development project to conserve and safeguard Canterbury Cathedral and its heritage for future generations and enrich the experience of those who visit. Artelia has been fully embedded in the project from the development phase, co-ordinating the HF bid which secured a £13.8m grant and overseeing works whilst the Cathedral remains a place of worship and operational visitor attraction throughout.
Works include repairs to the West Towers, Nave roof and Christ Church Gate and landscaping of the South Precincts. A new Welcome Centre provides information, ticketing services and a shop with free to enter Viewing Gallery and interpretation. A purpose-built Community Studio will host activities and events. New interpretation trails, exhibitions, online resources and a multi-media guide will open up access to the Cathedral’s historic treasures.
