Clore Music Studio, New College, Oxford

Stunning, contemporary extension

The Clore Music Studios were delivered by ANG as a full Management Contracting Service, along with Quantity Surveying and Project Management duties.

Set within Oxford’s Central Conservation Area, with archaeological remains of 17th-century defensive earth ramparts to the rear of the site originating from the English Civil War, the building was designed by noted architects, John McAslan & Partners, to complement its historic setting.

Constructed over three levels, The Clore Music Studios building provides a range of high-quality performance spaces for the practice and study of music, opera and drama. A large rehearsal room occupies the ground floor, with upper floors containing two medium-sized chamber music studios and a series of solo or duo practice rooms. The acoustic finishes throughout the building provide exceptional sound clarity.

The building and music studios within are full of traditional construction detail – clad in Portland stone and featuring detailed bronzed metalwork and internal oak wall linings. A glazed entrance and circulation space link the music studios to the existing Savile House.

The meticulously crafted building was shortlisted for a British Construction Industry Award in 2020.
