Family Kitchen + Shop: Royal Botanic Gardens Kew

Value added cost management

“Artelia UK provided excellent cost management throughout the project in the delivery of the Family Kitchen & Shop.  The attention to detail in the design cost reports, tender evaluation and management of variations was exemplary whilst the calm and non-confrontational style of communication helped maintain a very collaborative culture around the contract. I very much hope I have the chance to work with them again in the future.”

Patrick Wynniatt-Husey, Project Manager, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

The mission of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew) is to protect and share the wonders of plants and fungi to enable a better world for everyone. With the Family Kitchen + Shop, sitting sustainably at the centre of this UNESCO World Heritage site, the organisation has truly embodied that vision, with a magical celebration of nature and learning, helping to make children and parents excited about food growth, hygiene and preparation.

The simplicity and compact footprint of the Family Kitchen & Shop building delivers value in its functionality and efficiency with the timber clad northern closed side housing a large commercial kitchen, storage and WCs. In contrast the southern side is an open dining space and enjoys a fully glazed facade overlooking the Children’s Garden (opened in 2019), where interactive structures double up as seats, tables, worktops, lights and educational tools. In addition to the restaurant there is also a reading area and a shop, ensuring the new Family Kitchen & Shop is the perfect pit-stop for families.

The building proudly lives up to RBG Kew’s commitment to become ‘climate positive’ by 2030, achieving BREEAM Excellent through low embodied carbon, highly efficient fabric and building systems and renewable generation through roof-mounted photovoltaics, reducing carbon emissions by more than 35%.

The project was shortlisted for the RICS Sustainability Award in 2022.
