PROJECT - Insurance Reinstatement

Major flood damage reinstatement of a five-star hotel, Mayfair, London

Insurance reinstatement of Art Deco Gallery

Reinstatement of the Silver Gallery – an art deco interior following a catastrophic ceiling collapse during a wedding on 31 March 2019 possibly as a result of a burst pipe. Miraculously, there were no injuries, however the damage was extensive.

The original ceiling was hung from a heavy metal grid which on collapse caused damage to the columns, cornings, walls, flood finishes, marble clad low-level walls, lighting, electrics and all finished within the area.

History

The Silver Gallery was part of an early 1930’s addition to the existing hotel, as a luxurious and decadent Art Deco entrance for guests arriving from Piccadilly to enter the ballroom at sub-basement level. The original architects for this extension was Messrs. Henry Tanner, and the decoration to the Silver Gallery at ground floor level and the grand staircase down to the ballroom were designed by Messrs. Kenan Ltd.

Reinstatement

Reinstatement works commenced in spring 2019 and consisted of the creation of a new decorative ceiling; repairs to the ornate balustrading which has been cleaned, repatinated and reinstated; and new palladium gilding to the walls and other decorative plaster details.

Works included new concealed services throughout, discreet flush ceiling access hatches to improve future maintenance, together with new subtle emergency lighting and smoke detection.

Strong partnership

ANG’s design team including Donald Insall Associates, The Morton Partnership and Max Fordham were magnificent in defining the detail and handling very sensitive listed building consent issues, which enabled our site team to restore the art deco interior to its former glory in good time.

The Silver Gallery is now closer to its original early 1930’s appearance than ever before, with improved lighting and the restored original finishes recreating the original luxurious design intention for this fabulous space.

“We inspected the complete repaid of the Silver Gallery this afternoon. I was impressed by the high quality of the scholarly repair work and overall appearance of the restored Gallery. The restoration works that were carried our constituted like-for-like-repairs, albeit extensive ones, and on that basis listed consent was not required.”
