Surrey County Cricket Club is developing plans to make the Kia Oval the largest cricket stadium in the UK, with a capacity of 40,000 in time for the Ashes in 2023. Phase One of this redevelopment involves constructing a new three-tier stand in between the Micky Stewart Members’ Pavilion and the Peter May Stand, which Artelia delivered in 2016. The development will give the impression of two tiers ‘floating’ above the Peter May Stand. These will connect through to the Micky Stewart Members’ Pavilion, which will have a new room added and there will be a further two roof terraces. A new building called 1 Oval Square will curve around the perimeter of the ground, linking to the stand, providing additional spaces for conferences, events and hospitality. Artelia has developed the phasing for the project over a year and a half to minimise disruption during the cricket season. The scheme is due to be finished in time for the 2021 season.
